Middle Years Programme

Grade 6 - Grade 10

Carleton College International School is proud to be an IB World School fully authorized to offer the International Baccalaureate (IB) Primary Years Programme (PYP), Middle Years Programme (MYP), and Diploma Programme (DP).
IB World Schools share a common philosophy—a commitment to improving the teaching and learning of a diverse and inclusive community of students by delivering challenging, high-quality programmes of international education that embody a powerful vision.
The Middle Years Programme (MYP) at Carleton College International School is designed to promote learning in young people (aged 11 to 16) by making connections between academic theory and the real world. Each unit emphasizes both local and global contexts, encouraging inquiry and fostering critical reflection. MYP students engage with problems of all kinds, considering their relevance not only to themselves and their immediate environment but also to wider society and the world at large.
Assessment in the MYP is rigorous and criterion-based, focusing on the acquisition of key skills and approaches to learning across subject areas. These transferable skills are applied in interdisciplinary units and reinforced through authentic projects. At CCIS, assessment results are triangulated with standardized international benchmarks, such as the Measure of Academic Progress (MAP) tests, to ensure alignment with global standards.
MYP students demonstrate their understanding not only through academic work but also through meaningful action. Community projects and personal projects form an integral part of the programme, reflecting the IB’s mission to develop active, compassionate, and lifelong learners who can navigate the world through inquiry, reflection, and responsible action.

The MYP curriculum

The MYP curriculum framework comprises eight subject groups, providing a broad and balanced education for early adolescents.

The MYP requires at least 50 hours of teaching time for each subject group, in each year of the programme. In the final two years of the programme, carefully-defined subject group flexibility allows students to meet local requirements and personal learning goals.
